Fire Stopping Surveys

Passive fire protection plays a critical role in the safety of your site. If you manage a public building, educational facility or hospitality venue, it is especially important to protect life, property and assets.

Here at Howes, we help you do exactly that. Our team of DBS-certified engineers will provide meticulous fire stopping surveys to assess the current situation. Using floor plans provided by you, our fire compartmentation surveys will identify the potential of your site to contain flames and smoke by assessing its fire resistance and protection.

We will check:

  • Building compartments
  • Floors
  • Walls
  • Service risers
  • Roof voids

Once assessed, our team will give open and honest feedback on your next steps. We will recommend a tailored fire compartmentalisation plan for your site and explain what this means for the future.

You should note that refurbished or refitted buildings may have compromised passive fire protection. Whatever the circumstances of your premises, our experts will carry out thorough checks.

We also have membership to the BM TRADA Q-Mark Fire Door Installation, Maintenance and Fire Stopping schemes for your peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fire doors are tested and rated by time. Typically FD30 (30 minutes), FD60 (60 minutes), FD90 or FD120. This indicates how long the door can withstand fire before failing. The actual rating depends on the door’s design, materials and hardware used.

Yes. Fire doors are designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke by compartmentalising a building. They should always remain closed or be fitted with an automatic closing device that activates during a fire alarm.

A certified fire door set comprises the door leaf, frame, intumescent seals, hinges, fire-rated hardware (including handles, locks and closers), and any glazing or vision panels. All components must be tested and approved to work together as part of a certified system.

Fire doors should be surveyed at least every 6 months, or more frequently in high-traffic areas. Regular maintenance ensures that seals, hinges and closers remain in complete working order and compliant with fire safety regulations.

Intumescent strips expand when exposed to heat, sealing the gap between the door and frame to stop smoke and flames from passing through. They are an essential safety feature and must never be painted over or removed.

It’s strongly recommended that a qualified professional install fire doors. Incorrect installation can compromise the door’s fire rating and void certification. Always use certified installers.

Fire doors are needed in most commercial, public and multi-residential buildings as part of fire compartmentation design.

Certified fire doors will have a label, plug or tag (usually on the top edge or hinge side of the door) indicating the manufacturer, fire rating and certification number. If any of these are missing, the door’s fire performance cannot be guaranteed.
